Aerial Bird Count - Penguin Island, Western Australia

GUS undertook a survey over Penguin Island,  located in the Shoalwater Marine Park off the coast of Western Australia.  Managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW), there are over 50 species of sea birds on the island, which is also one of the largest breeding colonies of Pelicans in WA. The nesting colony of Pelicans was inventoried, with several surveys undertaken to assess the temporal variability in the population.

Aerial counts of bird colonies utilising UAVs allows for minimally intrusive, cost-effective population inventories. UAVs are especially relevant for remote, or hard to access areas such as small islands.
