Project: Earthquake recovery mapping of Liquefied Natural Gas Project, Papua New Guinea

ExxonMobil PNG (EMPNG)

2018

In early 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Hela province of Papua New Guinea. The earthquake’s epicentre was located close to EMPNG’s Hides Gas Conditioning Plant and led to the suspension of operations while damage to the plant and export pipeline was assessed.

GUS was engaged by EMPNG to conduct damage assessment surveys of the pipeline Right of Way and associated access roads using drone-mounted LiDAR sensors.

The survey was carried out in challenging conditions of high altitude, rugged terrain, dense vegetation, variable weather conditions and difficult access.

The results of the survey were detailed topographic maps of damaged and potentially unstable areas. This information assisted EMPNG develop plans for remediation works.
